The Latina/o Worker Leadership Institute invites all workers, union or non-union, and activists from allied organizations to share ideas and grow skills for responding to the challenges facing Latina/o working persons and learn about Latina/o culture. We welcome participants from all genders and all cultural or ethnic backgrounds.

WORKSHOPS


1. Latino History: Culture and history are what makes our lives amazing and wonderful. The Latin people have added so much to the world and their Unions. This workshop will take you through the Latinos’ contributions to the Labor movement.

2.Personal Finance 101: If you need help getting started on saving and getting your finances in order, this beginning finance 101 is for you. You will walk through budgeting, debt reduction, wills and trusts and more.

3. Contract Prep 101: This workshop gets you prepared to sit down across the bargaining table from management. Instructors will cover the early steps to effectively prepare and confidently present your demands at the table.

4. Steward and Committeeperson Training: Thinking about running for Steward or Committeeperson? Learn the roles and responsibilities of a Steward or Committeeperson as well as learning the basics of grievance handling, determining if an issue is a grievance or a gripe, and more.

5. [FULL] Addressing Mental Health and Worker-to-Worker Conflict: Have you ever had an argument with a co-worker and you thought that the argument was over something small and insignificant, but your co-worker did not? Participants in this workshop will review techniques to increase understanding of others’ perspectives, mental health, ways to avoid conflict, and helping those having a hard time coping with life.

6. Colegio de Niños: Bring your children ages 8-15 to this one-day workshop on September 23, 2023, to learn about Labor and the benefits of Union activism. Fee is $50 per child and each child must be registered as an individual registrant. Register by September 14th.

7. Running an Effective Campaign Inside and Outside the Union: Campaigns are not only used to get elected, but they can also be used to unite others around specific goals. In this workshop you will learn skills and strategies critical for both running an effective election campaign and rallying people to support common interests.

8. Workplace Safety: Learn about workplace safety standards and the rights afforded to you within your workplace. Participants in this workshop will also learn how to utilize this information to better protect their membership and themselves.

9. [CANCELLED] Cultural Emersion: Immerse yourself in the Latin culture. Explore the many traditions and attributes that make this culture strong and beautiful.

10. What is Organizing and How Can I Use It?: Organizing is an under used opportunity to strengthen your union and your community. This workshop will show you the tools you can use to effectively organize to build power inside your workplace, your Union, and your community.

Registration Information


REGISTRATION: cost is $600 ($540 tuition, $60 mandatory meal fee): Register online at clcs.umd.umich.edu, email photo/scan of this form  to CLCS.info@umich.edu or fax 313-588-6430. Note, postal mail can take up to two weeks to reach us.  You do not need your payment or voucher first to register.  Please register and pay by September 14th, 2023. If we receive the full $600 payment by that date, you are eligible for the Express Lane—a shorter wait at check in. The mandatory meal payment includes 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches; evening meals are on your own. Tuition Assistance Programs (TAPs) cover tuition costs, but not meals. If using TAP, apply for $540 tuition; you or your workplace pay the $60 meal payment before hand or at registration. If you are intending to bring children, please note that they are an additional $50 each and must be registered separately.

 

TIME AND DATES: Check-in is Thursday, September 21, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Welcome Session is 7:00pm to 9:00pm. A second check-in is 7:30am to 9:00am Friday. Conference runs 8:00am to 5:00pm Friday & Saturday, with graduation on Saturday.

CANCELLATION/REFUND : The last date to cancel the event at no cost is September 14th. To be valid, cancellations must be called in to CLCS at 313-583-6400. Registrants who do not cancel by the deadline or No-Show owe full payment of $600.
