Latina/o Worker Leadership Institute

The Latina/o Worker Leadership Institute invites all workers, union or non-union, and activists from allied organizations to share ideas and grow skills for responding to the challenges facing Latina/o working persons and learn about Latina/o culture. We welcome participants from all genders and all cultural or ethnic backgrounds.

WORKSHOPS

1. Steward & Committeeperson TrainingThinking about running for Steward or Committeeperson? Learn the roles and responsibilities of a Steward or committeeperson as well as the basics of grievance handling, investigating, determining if an issue is a grievance or a gripe, and more.

2. Union and Community MobilizationThis workshop is designed to empower participants with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively mobilize their unions and community organizations.


3. Coligio De NinosBring your children ages 8-15 to this one-day workshop on Saturday, September 28, 2024, to learn about Labor and the benefits of Union activism. Registration fee for Youth is $60. A parent/guardian must be a conference participant.


4. Latin Contributions to the Labor MovementLatin contributions have often been underappreciated. This workshop reveals lessons for today’s unionists from Latina/o history and activism in the early struggles for Worker’s rights to the contemporary efforts for social and economic justice.


5. Promoting Mental Well-Being The stresses of life can sometimes be overwhelming. This is an opportunity to explore ways to identify, understand and seek resources that can assist in maintaining mental well-being for yourself, your family, and other union members.


6. Latina/o’s in Leadership-Your Power is in Your Vote Harness the power to make your voice heard and shape a positive future for our communities. Learn ways to use your vote and political activism to fight against anti-immigrant policies and for worker rights.


7. Basic Unionism If you are new to the union and interested in learning how things work, this workshop is for you. Participants will better understand solidarity as the source of union strength, the basics of how a democratic union runs, committee structures, and contract language you should know.


8. Labor Law/FMLA Update Participant s will review Labor Law and recent changes. There will also be a focus on understanding and utilizing the latest rules and case law under the Family Medical Leave Act.


9. 2024 Know Your Civil Rights & Human Rights There has been several changes in Civil and Human Rights over the past few years. More are proposed changes for the future. Learn the current landscape to ensure the rights of all workers are enforced and protected.


10. Our Voice, Our Place in the Labor Movement Join this workshop to explore Latino workers in the labor movement and ways to strengthen their voices and increase representation for a more just and equitable future.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

 

REGISTRATION: cost is $600 ($540 tuition, $60 mandatory meal fee) Youth one day is $60 and must be registered by the deadline.   

Register online by using the below form, email photo/scan of the flyer above to CLCS.info@umich.edu or fax 313-588-6430. Note, postal mail can take up to two weeks to reach us.  You do not need your payment or voucher first to register.  Please register and pay by September 19th, 2024. If we receive the full $600 payment by that date, you are eligible for the Express Lane—a shorter wait at check in. The mandatory meal payment includes 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches; evening meals are on your own. Tuition Assistance Programs (TAPs) cover tuition costs, but not meals. If using TAP, apply for $540 tuition; you or your workplace pay the $60 meal payment beforehand or at registration.

 

TIME AND DATES: Check-in is Thursday, September 26, 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Welcome Session is 7:00pm to 9:00pm. A second check-in is 7:30am to 9:00am Friday. Conference runs 8:00am to 5:00pm Friday & Saturday, with graduation on Saturday.

HOTEL ROOMS:  Rooms are available at the DoubleTree by Hilton Detroit-Dearborn at 5801 Southfield Freeway, Detroit, for $145 per night plus tax. You can book at this special rate by calling 1-800-222-8733 and ask for code LWLI by September 12, 2024 to reserve a room. All room cancellations must be completed by Sunday, September 22, 2024. CANCELLATION/REFUND: The last date to cancel the event at no cost is September 19th. To be valid, cancellations must be called in to CLCS at 313-583-6400. Registrants who do not cancel by the deadline or No-Show owe full payment of $600.
