The 2018 Michigan School for Women Workers is open to all workers, union or non-union, and leaders from a variety of organizations to learn together about new ideas, strategies and skills to meet the needs and challenges facing workers in our ever-changing workplaces. We welcome participants from all genders and all cultural or ethnic backgrounds.

WORKSHOPS

1. WOMEN IN THE TRADES: Are you interested in opportunities in the skilled trades? Currently working a non-traditional job, and encounter difficulties at work? This workshop is for you!

2. WORKPLACE VIOLENCE: What happens when violence enters the shop? Get to know the warning signs, proper response, and possible solutions to workplace violence.

3. LOCAL UNION ADMINISTRATION: This class will focus on the rules and regulations governing a union, including federal laws, fiduciary responsibilities, elections and committee work.

4. UNIONISM 101: This course informs and educates participants on how to get involved and how to successfully build unity in your membership.

5. SISTERHOOD & SOLIDARITY: Class members will discuss collaboration vs. competition, and be given tools to deal with both. Learn about micro-aggression, lateral violence, and how to build solidarity at work.

6. PRINT & SOCIAL MEDIA: This class teaches modern methods to inform members, combining traditional printed materials as well as social media. You will learn how to create a Facebook page, newsletters and journals, etc.

7. PUBLIC SPEAKING: Get up and speak up! If you’re active in the union, or want to become active, you have to get up and speak up. Learn to put together a brief speech, one that will move your listeners and get attention in a good way.

8. FINANCIAL PLANNING: How much money are you going to need to retire? When can you afford to retire? What will it take to meet those goals? Come and learn how to plan for your financial future.

COST is $600 ($540 tuition, $60 mandatory meal fee). Please register and pay by March 23, 2018. If we receive the full $600 payment by that date, you are eligible for the Express Lane—a shorter wait in line to check in. Meal payment covers breakfast and lunch; mandatory; evening meals are on your own. Tuition Assistance (TAP) programs cover tuition portion, but not meals. If using TAP, apply for $540 tuition; you or your workplace must include the $60 meal payment with your registration. CONFIRMATIONS ARE SENT BY EMAIL!

TIMES AND DATES The event begins late afternoon Thursday, April 5. Check-in is Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30pm. A welcome program starts promptly at 7pm and runs until 9pm. There is a 2nd check-in period and continental breakfast from 8-9am Friday, April 6. Program begins at 9am; workshops follow and run until 4:30pm Friday, and from 8 am until 4:30pm Saturday 7th.

PLACE The conference will be held at the UM-D’s Fairlane Center, North Building, at 19000 Hubbard Road, Dearborn, MI 48126. Parking is free and abundant in the North Lot at the far end of the Fairlane Buildings (you pass South on your way up the drive, North is 2nd bldg.).

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS Rooms may be reserved at the union-represented Edward Hotel, 600 Town Center Drive, Dearborn (313-592-3622). Rooms are $104.00 per night + tax. Be sure to mention the conference for the special rate.

CANCELLATION/REFUND The last date to withdraw at no cost is Friday, March 30. To be valid, cancellations must be called in to CLCS (313-583-6400). Registrants who do not cancel by the deadline or fail to attend owe full payment of $600.00.
