WORKSHOPS
1. Colegio de Niños / Kids' College – Bring your children ages 8-15 to this one-day workshop on Saturday, September 20, 2024, to learn about Labor and the benefits of Union activism. Registration fee for Youth is $60. A parent/guardian must be a conference participant.
2. Understanding Labor Law and the Family Medical Leave Act – This workshop gives a comprehensive overview of essential labor law and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Participants will gain a clear understanding of employer obligations, employee rights, and recent updates. Topics will include wage and hour laws, workplace protections, FMLA eligibility, leave management, and documentation requirements.
3. Know your Immigration Rights, Know your Responsibilities – Participants will learn about fundamental rights under the U.S. Constitution- regardless of immigration status-including protections during encounters with federal immigration and local law enforcement. Immigrant employment rights will also be covered.
4. The Struggle, Latina/o Labor History – This workshop explores the powerful and often overlooked history of Latina and Latino workers in the U.S. Labor movement. Participants will learn about key historical events, union campaigns and inspirational leaders.
5. Defending Rights, Building Power: Steward & Committee – This workshop is designed to build knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to represent members effectively, uphold the contract and ensure a fair and respectful workplace. Participants will learn the basics of addressing members' concerns, handling grievances, and working together to solve problems.
6. Organizing for Power: Building from the Ground Up – This workshop equips participants with core skills and strategies needed to organize effectively in the workplace and beyond. Whether you’re trying to grow your union, build momentum for a contract campaign, or take on issues like safety or fair pay, organizing is the foundation of collective bargaining.
7. Supporting Mental Health in the Workplace & Community – Mental Health affects every part of our lives. This workshop provides a practical and compassionate introduction to mental health, with a focus on promoting well-being both in the workplace and in the community.
8. Understanding Union Foundation & Standing Committees – This workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of unionism and the important role standing committee’s play in building a strong, democratic union. Participants will learn about the history, purpose, and power of unions; including how collective action protects workers’ rights and creates positive change in the workplace & beyond.
