2019 Wednesday Night Winter Semester

January 9 - February 13, UM-D Fairlane Center North Building, 19000 Hubbard Drive, Dearborn, MI, 48126

The Winter Semester in Labor Relations is for workers who prefer evening instruction during the middle of the week. Students attend the full program over 6 Wednesdays during the months of January and February. Class is from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Seating is limited to 36 Persons.

We welcome participants from all genders and all cultural or ethnic backgrounds.

CALENDAR

January 9 Topic: Labor-Management Contracts -

The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is the key governing document in unionized workplaces. This session explains the CBA legal standing and maps the major components to the CBA.

January 16 Topic: Preparing for Bargaining -

This session reviews the pre- negotiation institutional, economic, political and sociological assessment that shapes bargaining strategy and tactics.

January 23 Topic: Bargaining Session 1-

Students participate in a bargaining simulation based on actual cases. Teams will be formed and a first round of bargaining will take place.

January 30 Topic: Bargaining Session 2 -

Students complete the bargaining simulation and will debrief on the outcomes.

February 6 Topics: Grievances and Arbitration -

Ratifying the CBA is just the beginning. Afterward, the rights in the CBA need to be enforced through the grievance process and arbitration. This session explains these remedial processes.

February 13 Topic: Impasse Resolution-

There are times when the parties fail to reach an agreement. This session canvasses impasse methods, including interest arbitration, mediation, and collective action.

Register Online: You can use the online registration form here. Under conference selection chose "other". Then enter "Winter Semester" under workshop first choice. Do not enter anything under second choice.

COST is $600. This instruction might be covered by joint Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) funds. If you are unsure, contact your education representative.

TIMES AND DATES: Instruction sessions begin on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Subsequent sessions are held Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. The last session is held on February 13, 2019

PLACE: All sessions will be held at the UM-D’s Fairlane Center, North Building, at 19000 Hubbard Road, Dearborn, MI 48126. Parking is free in the North Lot at the far end of the Fairlane Buildings (pass the South Bldg. to get to the North bldg.).

CANCELLATION/REFUND: The last date to withdraw at no cost is Friday, January 11, 2019. To be valid, cancellations must be called in to CLCS (313-583- 6400). Registrants who do not cancel by the deadline or fail to attend owe full payment of $600.00.
